The Context Behind the Creation of the SP2

In the late 1960s, Brazil was experiencing growth in the automotive industry, but vehicle imports were banned due to import substitution policies. This encouraged domestic manufacturers to develop exclusive models for the local market.

Volkswagen Brasil already dominated the economy car segment with the Beetle, Kombi and the Brasília but lacked a sports model. Observing the success of national sports cars like the Puma GTE, VW decided to develop a sports car of its own, combining a modern look with the reliable mechanics of the Beetle.

Development of the Volkswagen SP2

The project, led by Marx R. Trindade and José Vicente Novita Martins, was named SP in reference to the state of São Paulo, where it was developed. Before the official launch of the SP2, Volkswagen created a prototype called the SP1, which had a less powerful engine and did not meet expectations.

The final model, the SP2, was launched in 1972 and immediately stood out for its bold design, aerodynamic lines, and headlights integrated into the body, resembling European sports cars of the time. Its low and wide body gave it a sporty appearance, and the interior offered finishes superior to those of Volkswagen’s conventional models.

The Volkswagen SP2 was produced between 1972 and 1976, with a total of 10,205 units manufactured. The model was sold new exclusively in Brazil, making one of the most beautiful and rarest air cooled VW in the entire World.

Today, many SP2s have been exported by collectors to Europe and the United States, where they are valued as one of the most different classic VWs.

• SP1 and Its Rarity: The SP1 was launched before the SP2 but had a 1.6L engine with 65 hp, making it even weaker. Only 88 units of the SP1 were produced, making it one of the rarest cars in Brazil.
