Take a look at this ongoing 1974 T1 Customization project. This ordinary bus is being transformed into a Samba bus with a sunroof and camper interior. It will also have a custom built conditioning system installed. Keep posted! We will update our photo and video report in a regular basis.
Arrival at the shop
Once the bus arrives at the shop, we perform an inspection in order to measure if any other repairs need to be done before starting the customization itself:
Undercarriage Metalwork
The undercarriage of this bus was not in the best shape. There was rust and poorly welded spots on the majority of the undercarriage. Here are some pictures below of the work we did to remove the old paint and replace the metal that was in deplorable condition. Since the client wants the bus to have TÜV in Germany we need to make sure that everything is done properly on the undercarriage.
Paint Preparation
After performing all the necessary tasks to restore the metal on the undercarriage we started on the paint preparation phase. Here you can see how we use a thin coat of polyester filler to fine tune the irregularities in the metal to make a smooth surface on which we can apply a nice coat of paint.
Painting
Now we are finally in the painting phase and the undercarriage looks remarkable. The client was not all that interested in the original black and he decided to go for the fire red as seen in the pictures below. Moreover, the motor flanges were painted white to offset the red color for the rest of the undercarriage.
Mechanics
After performing the mechanical inspection, we saw that the brakes were shot and need replacing as well as the suspension. We took care of that as well as the small oil leak that was a result of an old gasket. We changed all the problem areas and now it is as good as new.
